Similarity is not a plagiarism verdict

For UK coursework, dissertations, and research degrees, the similarity percentage is only an indicator of matched text. It can include quotations, references, standard terminology, and correctly attributed source material. Your supervisor, marker, and university policy determine how a report should be interpreted.

Many UK universities describe Turnitin as text-matching software and advise students to use reports to develop better referencing and writing skills. That is the most useful approach: inspect the match, understand the source, and make a genuine academic decision.

Before submitting coursework

1. Check your module handbook and assessment brief for referencing and AI-use requirements.
2. Confirm that quoted text is marked and cited in your required style, such as Harvard, OSCOLA, MHRA, or another department standard.
3. Review paraphrases for original structure and clear attribution.
4. Check appendices, tables, captions, and reference lists for completeness.
5. For dissertations, speak with your supervisor if a significant match is unclear.

Draft submissions and final submissions may differ

A university draft submission area, when offered, may have different settings from the final assessment. Do not assume that an external check or a draft result replaces your school’s official process. Follow the submission route and deadline set by your department.
